Weekend Update

Chris got home early from work on Wednesday and had the whole day off Thursday and Friday, so we had an extra-long weekend! Pretty much the entire weekend was spent cleaning, organizing, moving, and going through every single thing that we own. We made the decision to stay in our two-bedroom apartment for another year and that required some creative thinking of how we're going to fit Baby Jack's eventual stuff into our place. We donated literally a dozen garbage bags to DI and the house feels so spacious now. We put a few things in storage (even with the storage unit our rent is still less than we would pay to move).  We also bought a brand new kitchen table and chairs!  Hooray!

Saturday morning Hayden gave me a much-needed break and took me, for my birthday, to the Desert Star Theatre's production "Back From the Future." It was hilarious! All that they do there is parodies. I'd never been, so it was great to be able to go with Hayden.

Poor Dutch is sick. All last week he was quiet and still, which first tipped me off that something was wrong. If he's not going a mile a minute then you KNOW he's not feeling good. On Saturday he started coughing, had watery eyes, and had a runny nose. Poor baby. It makes me sad not to be able to do anything about it!

Yesterday we had to stay home from church because Dutch was sick, which ended up being fortuitous because I got REALLY sick. The entire day all I felt like doing was moaning. I couldn't get comfortable and I couldn't keep anything down. It was miserable. I haven't had a bad day like that for a long time. It makes me appreciate my good days even more!

A Change of Plans

Okay, so we've decided to stay in our two bedroom apartment for another year.  They made us an offer we couldn't refuse!  We spent most of the day today rearranging rooms so we have more space, re-organizing all the closets, and just basically going through and getting rid of a truckload of "stuff" we don't need anymore.

The problem is now that we're staying here Baby Jack won't have his own room for a nursery.  He'll sleep in our room for a while and then move in with big brother.  So now I need a new theme for the room that Dutch and Jack will share.  I'm thinking of using orange and blue as the colors of the room, because we have a lot of blue furniture already and orange is awesome with blue.

Any ideas?

The Miracle of Speech Therapy

I don't think I gush nearly enough about Dutch's Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) Abby.  She's amazing!  This last week her miracle went above and beyond all previous miracles though.

Last March or April Dutch stopped calling me Mama.  I'm not sure why, there was never an explanation, but one day I was Daddy.  And so was Chris.  So when he would call Daddy if Chris wasn't home he was talking to me.  Since the day it started I have corrected him EVERY TIME he called me Daddy.  I would try to get him to imitate my M sound and everything.  It didn't work.

Abby, in all her amazingness, has gotten Dutch to call me Ma and Mama!  I don't even know that she realized what a huge thing this was for me, but I will make sure when she comes on Monday that she knows how much it meant to me.  He's even self-correcting if he calls me Daddy!

It's a January miracle!

A Pregnancy Complaint

Why are maternity clothes so expensive?  Unless it is a transitional piece that I can wear AFTER the baby is born I am not willing to spend $100 on a shirt, or a pair of pants, or a dress!

Where are the inexpensive maternity clothes?  The ones under $50, or even better $25?  I would like to find those and buy them because I still want to look pretty even if I do feel like a big white whale. (Just call me Ishmael.)

A Game of Catch-Up

So the further behind I get in my blogging the less I want to blog. Here's a quick run-down of the two birthdays we had in our house this last week.

I turned 28 last Monday. Though it was a holiday, Chris did not get the day off so we decided to celebrate the Saturday before my birthday. We left Dutch with Grandpa Greg and Grandma Honey and went to lunch together. It was really nice to be out just the two of us. Chris also bought me a dozen white roses, my favorite. It was a very nice, very mellow day.

My actual birthday was not nearly as restful. Dutch woke up two hours earlier than he usually does and decided it was Messy Monday. I literally went from cleaning up one mess to the next the entire day. While I would clean up one he would make another and I kept telling him, "It's my birthday! Be good on Mama's birthday!" This did not phase him at all. The worst and most heartbreaking mess was when he pulled my cake off the counter and it landed on the carpet, frosting side down. Very sad.

My handsome husband is officially an old man! He turned 30 on Saturday. Dutch, to celebrate his Daddy's birthday, woke up at about 5am and didn't want anyone to go back to sleep. All the more time to spend wishing Daddy a happy birthday! He then proceeded to be an absolute terror for the entire morning. Not fun at all. So Chris dropped him off at his mom and dad's and we went out and about. There wasn't really a plan for the day, it was just a time to enjoy each other. Then we went to his mom and dad's for dinner and cake and watching family movies. Dutch still seemed to think that birthday celebration needed to include lots and lots of tantrums. All in all Chris said it was a really wonderful day though.

Thank you all for the birthday wishes, gifts, phone calls and cards. We both felt very loved on our days.

Katherine Wins

Baby Jack's nursery is going to be decorated in Jack and the Beanstalk!  I had been wanting a fairy tale theme that wasn't girly, but couldn't think of anything besides dragons.  Thanks to Katherine for the amazing idea that I never would have thought of on my own.

So now comes the part where everyone helps me find ideas.  Love you!

Baby Jack's Nursery

What should I do for Baby Jack's nursery?  I'm trying to think of something cute and clever, but nothing is coming.  I'd like it to have a book tie-in, but that's not a requirement.  The color I'd like to use is green, I think.  Any suggestions?

A List for Tuesday

Five Things I Learned This Weekend

1. Eating lunch out with Chris alone is more fun than eating lunch out with Chris and Dutch.
2. Dutch doesn't care if it's my birthday, he'll make as many (or more) messes as usual.
3. I am loved by lots of people and that makes me lucky.
4. Getting flowers is more fun when they're a surprise.
5. Dutch is now getting very into soft and silky things.  (My mom-in-law got me a new bathrobe for my birthday and Dutch has been rubbing my arm every chance he gets.)

My Husband the PA

Chris had an emergency surgery yesterday and got home a little after 10pm.  Dutch was still awake and calling for Daddy.  Chris, being the sweet sucker that he is, went and rescued him.  It seems neither of my boys could go to bed without spending some time together.

I got to thinking how grateful I am that Chris decided to be a Physican's Assistant instead of a doctor.  The schooling was shorter and cheaper.  He gets to change medical fields whenever he feels like it, and he doesn't have the responsibility of a doctor.  No running a clinic, no malpractice insurance, no being on-call.  Well, he is on-call, but he only has to go in if there's a surgery (like yesterday), whereas his boss has to go in and see any person that walks in the door.  It's very rare for Chris to have a night later than 7pm, but Dr. Warner routinely doesn't get home until 10pm or later.  While I might hate his sporadic hours, I'm very grateful he still only works 40 to 50 hours a week instead of the 80 to 100 that most doctors work, especially residents.  All in all I am very grateful that this is the path we chose.

If you're thinking of going into medicine, I'm telling you, being a PA is the way to go!

He was saying "cheese" in both the smiling pictures, that's why his smile looks a little weird.

Photo Catch-Up

So the Christmas photos are all on the video camera and I don't know how to upload those, so they'll have to wait for Chris to have some extra time.  In the meantime, here are some other pictures I've neglected to put up.

Dutch at Grandpa Morgan's for Thanksgiving

He has recently commandeered my pink blankie and uses it as his own now.

Eating not one but two suckers at a time.  Chris put suckers in the wooden tree that we have for suckers and Dutch went to town!

He got really excited to watch a movie while sitting in his stroller.  Ironic, since he won't ever get into it voluntarily otherwise!

Christmas 2010

We had a wonderful Christmas this year: Dutch and Chris both got spoiled, spoiled, spoiled.  This was a notable year for me because it's the first time I've cared  more about what others were getting.  Yes, at 27 I finally realized the joy of giving and not receiving.

Christmas was an all-day event, as it always is with the Davis family.  We woke up around 8:30 and Dutch got his stocking.  He got two new small Tonka trucks and a pull-along toy.  Then we got dressed and headed over to Greg and Kellie's for breakfast.

Dutch's 3 big presents at Greg and Kellie's were: a shopping cart with some fake food (from Mama and Daddy), a huge steel Tonka dump truck (from Uncle Zakky), and a Black and Decker Junior tool set, complete with drills and the requisite safety goggles (from Grandpa Greg).  He received a few other little things that he loved, but those were his three big ones.

Then we moved on to Grandpa Morgan's house for more presents and lunch.  Aunt Kim bought Dutch an awesome Toy Story 3 phone, and Great-Grandpa Bob (through Grandma Kellie) bought him a Buzz Lightyear, by far the biggest hit of the day.

Then it was over to Grandma and Grandpa Davis's for even more presents and dinner.  Dutch received a couple of books and some Duplo and was pretty much done after this.

We went back to Greg and Kellie's at about 6:30 and Dutch was out for the night.  Besides a brief period where we woke him up to put on pajamas, he slept until 8:30 the next morning!  Poor little guy got all worn out!

He had a great day and really got into the spirit of helping everyone open their gifts.  There were a few minor tantrums, but no major meltdowns to speak of.  It was a wonderful day and so much fun to see Dutch's immense joy at every single gift he opened.  They were all greeted with "Wow!" (some even before they were unwrapped).

Pictures coming tomorrow.

A List for Tuesday

The problem with taking a break from blogging, no matter how small, is that it makes me feel WAY behind.  Here's a list of upcoming posts you can look forward to:

1. A run-down of Christmas
2. Pictures from the last few weeks
3. A retrospective of 2010
4. Additional posts about baby Sweetums (who will hopefully have a real name soon)
5. More complaining about this pregnancy, because it really has been awful!

So there's a lot to post about.  Hopefully I'll have the time and inclination to make good on the promises!
